    TOPIC:  Sustainable Concrete - Reducing the Carbon Footprint

    SPEAKER: Sean Monkman, Ph.D., P. Eng, Senior Vice President of Technology Development for CarbonCure Technologies



    The cement and concrete industry searches for ways to meet increasing demand while reducing the carbon footprint of the concrete produced. One approach is to upcycle CO2 as an input to concrete whereupon in mineralizes to form nanoscale CaCO3. The added in situ formed carbonates can increase the compressive strength of the concrete thereby allowing producers to optimize their mix designs. Testing has shown that 5 to 8% cement reductions paired with the carbon dioxide addition can be achieved without compromising compressive strength or durability. The use of carbon dioxide along with a lower cement usage reduces the carbon footprint of concrete without reducing performance. A retrofit CO2 injection approach has been employed by a selection of concrete producers. The industrial production across a network of more than 120 plants to date has produced more than 4.5 million yd3 of concrete while utilizing 1300 tons of CO2 and achieving 62,000 tonnes of net avoided and mineralized CO2. Carbon dioxide utilization in concrete production is a viable, synergistic and beneficial approach to meet industry sustainability goals.


    About the Speaker

    Sean Monkman is the Senior Vice President of Technology Development for CarbonCure Technologies. He oversees the company’s research and intellectual property efforts as they develop scalable carbon utilization technologies to create more sustainable concrete. Sean holds a PhD in Civil Engineering from McGill University. His career has included more than 25 years working in concrete materials including 15 years working on CO2 utilization approaches. Sean has authored more than three dozen papers and presentations on beneficial carbon dioxide utilization in concrete production and is a co-inventor on over 40 issued and pending patents related to the work. He was recognized the Mission Innovation Champion for Canada at the Fourth Mission Innovation Ministerial (MI-4) in 2019.
